In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, MUCFA mobilized quickly to support students at The Mico University who were hardest hit by the storm. Under the leadership of Executive Director Dr. Claudette Morris, teams on campus assembled and distributed relief packages containing food staples, canned goods, toiletries, sanitary products, bottled water, and essential household items. With the help of staff and volunteers, these supplies were gathered, sorted, and delivered to students in need, providing practical relief during a difficult and uncertain time.
MUCFA’s response has gone well beyond immediate distribution efforts. To date, the Foundation has contributed approximately J$900,000 toward The Mico Hurricane Melissa Relief efforts. In addition, two members of MUCFA’s Board of Directors, Executive Director Dr. Claudette Morris and Chief Operating Officer Trevor Thomas, have been invited to serve on The Mico Melissa Relief Fund Committee, helping guide recovery efforts and ensure accountability. MUCFA has also been formally appointed by The Mico University College as its agent for the receipt of donations in the United States, strengthening the flow of support from the diaspora.
Beyond emergency aid, MUCFA is helping to put lasting systems in place. The Foundation has committed to assisting The Mico University College in establishing a standard costing system to track the value of care packages distributed to students affected by the hurricane, ensuring transparency and better planning for future responses. This work reflects the deep commitment MUCFA holds to student welfare, resilience, and long-term recovery. Support for this effort is ongoing, and donations can be made through the MUCFA website to help continue providing relief and rebuilding hope for Mico students impacted by Hurricane Melissa.
