MUCFA

Since its founding by the Independence Batch of 1962, the Mico University College Foundation of America (MUCFA) has proudly supported deserving students through scholarships, bursaries, grants, and other forms of educational assistance. To date, the Foundation has disbursed approximately J$25.6 million (USD equivalent) in aid. In 2024, MUCFA awarded over US$38,000 to 24 students to help cover tuition, housing, and other academic needs. Looking ahead, another 24 students are set to receive US$42,100 in 2025, with US$16,000 of that sum designated for multi-year awards.

MUCFA’s support has also extended to college infrastructure, research, and collaboration with affiliates in pursuit of assistance to The Mico. The organization remains committed to growing its donor base and building lasting partnerships to ensure that more students can access the resources they need to complete their education and contribute meaningfully to society.

Owen James Memorial Scholarship

The Owen James Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of MUCFA founder Owen James and reflects his vision of giving back through education. Funded by his family, this award is dedicated to supporting students who demonstrate financial need and academic determination while pursuing an Education degree at Mico.

More than just financial assistance, the Owen James Memorial Scholarship represents a legacy of generosity - empowering recipients to one day uplift others as educators and leaders in their communities.

Earle B. Kennedy Scholarship

This full scholarship was created by the family of Earle B. Kennedy - a proud Mico alumnus serving  3 years as the Class of 1966 president - to commemorate his legacy of leadership, excellence, and devotion to service.

Awarded annually, the Earle B. Kennedy Scholarship supports a high-achieving 4th-year student who demonstrates both academic excellence and financial need. It honors Mr. Kennedy’s commitment to academic distinction and his lifelong dedication to the values embodied by The Mico.

Ren & Mervis Scholarships

Established by Mico alumni Renis and Mervis Johnson, these partial scholarships are awarded annually to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need.  The Johnsons, inspired by the life-changing impact of their own education at The Mico, and who have been financially committed to supporting Mico students for many decades, continue to support those who show the determination to succeed despite hardship. Recipients are selected based on GPA, personal character, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching and service.

Ben Dias Scholarship

The Ben Dias Scholarship was established in recognition of Dr. Ben Dias, a proud Mico alumnus whose lifelong dedication to chemistry education and student success has left an enduring mark on every institution he’s served.  Dr. Dias spent 24 years at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he rose through the academic ranks from Lecturer to Head of the Department of Chemistry. As a department leader, he secured a prestigious three-year grant from the Pfizer Foundation/United Negro College Fund’s “Art of Teaching Chemistry” program - an initiative that blended chemistry with mathematics, computer literacy, and student-centered teaching methods to enrich laboratory learning and problem-solving.

O'Neil Stevens

Established in 2025, the O’Neil Stevens Scholarship honors the life and legacy of the late O’Neil Stevens, a beloved educator and proud alumnus of The Mico University College.  Mr. Stevens served as Principal of Jessie Ripoll Primary School in Kingston, Jamaica, where he was known for his leadership, warmth, and deep commitment to student success. His sudden passing in a car accident was felt deeply across Jamaica’s education community. In response, MUCFA established this scholarship to ensure that his passion for teaching lives on through the next generation of educators.  The O’Neil Stevens Scholarship supports deserving students pursuing an education degree at The Mico University College. It is awarded to individuals who reflect the character, dedication, and service that Mr. Stevens exemplified throughout his career.
